1 Peter 3:13-16 says,
“Who then will harm you if you are devoted to what is good? But even if you should suffer for righteousness, you are blessed. Do not fear what they fear or be intimidated, but in your hearts regard Christ the Lord as holy, ready at any time to give a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you. Yet do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that when you are accused, those who disparage your good conduct in Christ will be put to shame.”
We have a responsibility as Christians, not to defend God, but to point people to the God they already know exists (Romans 1:18-20) through the person and work of Jesus Christ. One of the big reasons why Christians do not go out of their way to share the gospel with others is because of the fear they will get asked a question, or hear an objection, that they cannot answer. Ultimately, though, this is rooted in a fear of man over a fear of God.
Regardless, if you are a Christian, you know the gospel. If you want to know who to “give a defense to anyone who asks you…” then read your Bible and trust what is says! I believe one of our biggest failures in evangelicalism is that we don’t trust in the sufficiency of the Scriptures to bring someone to the knowledge of the Truth. The Bible says that in Christ “are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2:3). This means we can trust the Word of God to give us every and any answer to those who reject our message!
So with that established, how would you respond to someone like the man in this video? I encourage you to go get your Bible, watch this video, and then search the Scriptures. Or maybe you already know how you would respond! I’ll leave comments open on this post for you to respond.
